Chlamydia trachomatis is the leading infectious cause of preventable blindness and the most common sexually transmitted bacterium worldwide. Trachoma presents an environment in which to investigate chlamydial pathogenicity, the conjunctivae serving as an accessible model with an objectively observable phenotype.
