BACKGROUND Oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has high mortality and poor prognosis. Advanced tumours are treated with fluoropyrimidine/platinum chemotherapy (PBC) followed by second-line irinotecan or taxane monotherapy, but resistance is common and new therapeutic approaches are needed.
