Leptospirosis is an overlooked zoonotic disease caused by pathogenic Leptospira. The kidney is the major organ infected by Leptospira which causes tubulointerstitial nephritis. Leptospira outer membrane components contain several virulence factors that play important roles in the pathogenesis of leptospirosis.
