The causative agent of fire blight, Erwinia amylovora, synthesizes the exopolysaccharide (EPS) amylovoran, an important pathogenicity factor. Similarly, Pantoea stewartii, needs the related exopolysaccharide, stewartan, to cause Stewart’s bacterial wilt of sweet maize.
