The genetic basis of why some people are afflicted with severe, life-threatening episodes of COVID-19 has recently been identified: the presence of a portion of six Neanderthal-inherited genes on chromosome 3 at locus 3p21.31: SLC6A20, LZTFL1, CCR9, FYCO1, CXCR6 and XCR1.
