BACKGROUND: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2) is a hereditary syndrome characterized by medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), pheochromocytoma and hyperparathyroidism. MEN 2 is caused predominantly by germ-line mutations of the RET proto-oncogene.
