BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: In 1996, the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) was identified as one of the ligands of the RET transmembrane receptor. In the same year, GDNF mutations were found in association with RET protooncogene mutations in Hirschsprung patients.
