Surprisingly, disruption of the COX-1 gene resulted in generally healthy mice. This is in spite of the fact that prostaglandin levels in the tissues examined were reduced by greater than 99%. The results obtained to date with the COX-1 deficient mice indicate that some of the physiological roles previously attributed to COX-1 may not be entirely correct.
