BACKGROUND: The length and stability of telomeres (essential functional structures at the end of eukaryotic chromosomes) have been implicated in the control of cell lifespan. Most somatic cells lack telomerase, the enzyme that synthesizes telomeric DNA, and their telomeres shorten with cell division.
