The proliferation and differentiation of haemopoietic progenitor cells is dependent on their close relation with bone marrow stromal cells, which constitute a source of cytokines as well as expressing receptors for both the cytokines and progenitor cell adhesion molecules necessary for regulated haemopoiesis.
