A recombinant rat strain--Milan low-calpastatin strain (MLCS)--was derived from Milan hypertensive (MHS/Gib) and Milan normotensive (MNS/Gib) strains. The MLCS rats have normal blood pressure and low calpastatin activity, and this strain is proposed as a model for studies of the calpain-calpastatin system, which is involved in important cellular mechanisms.
