The cytogenetic effects of asbestos fibers on rat pleural mesothelial cells were studied in vitro. Crocidolite UICC significantly enhanced aneuploidy and produced few structural chromosome aberrations, whereas anatase, an isomorphic particle, induced no numerical or structural changes.
