The NTRC protein of enteric bacteria is an enhancer-binding protein that activates transcription by the sigma 54-holoenzyme form of RNA polymerase under nitrogen-limiting conditions. In vitro NTRC must be phosphorylated to catalyze ATP hydrolysis and activate transcription.
