Seventeen unrelated beta-thalassemia patients or carriers from Southwestern Iran were examined for the beta-globin gene mutations by polymerase chain reaction amplification of the beta-globin gene and direct genomic sequencing, or by the method of allele-specific oligonucleotide hybridization.
