The Pm promoter of the meta cleavage operon in the TOL (toluene degradation) plasmid pWW0 of Pseudomonas putida becomes activated by the plasmid-encoded XylS regulator in the presence of benzoate and certain substituted analogs such as 3-methylbenzoate.
