The basis of the auxotrophic ura1 phenotype in Schizophyllum commune has been investigated. Two point mutations causing changes in conserved amino acid positions 62 (from lysine to glutamate) and 79 (from leucine to phenylalanine) most likely are the cause for the observed phenotype, whereas the overall gene structure was unchanged.
