BACKGROUND: The lesions of Langerhans'-cell histiocytosis (histiocytosis X), a proliferative histiocytic disorder of unknown cause, contain histiocytes similar in phenotype to dendritic Langerhans' cells. The disease ranges in severity from a fatal leukemia-like disorder to an isolated lytic lesion of bone.
