Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) typically evolves from a macrophage-tropic, noncytopathic virus at early asymptomatic stages of infection to a T-cell-tropic, cytopathic, and syncytia-inducing virus population as humans progress to AIDS.
