Bronchial secretions of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) inevitably become colonised with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This organism often exhibits multiple phenotypes with different antibiotic susceptibility profiles. Isolating each colonial morphotype and determining its antibiotic susceptibility profile is labour-intensive and time-consuming.
