The influence of calcium currents expressed at early stages on the subsequent development of calcium currents was studied in embryonic rat hypothalamic neurones in culture. Voltage-activated calcium currents and spontaneous fluctuations of intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) were monitored.
