The role of the mrkD gene in attachment by a type 3 fimbriate Klebsiella pneumoniae strain was further characterized. A clinical isolate, K. pneumoniae IA565, was found to contain two copies of the gene encoding the fimbrial subunit, mrkA, and one copy of the gene encoding the adhesin subunit, mrkD.
