BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Rupture of carotid atherosclerotic plaques is a significant cause of stroke. We have previously analyzed 21 plaques by mass spectrometry and reported differing proteomic profiles between morphologically unstable (rupture-prone) and stable plaques.
