Mutations in retinitis pigmentosa GTPase regulator (RPGR) cause photoreceptor degeneration, vision loss, and eventual blindness. RPGR function requires glutamylation by tubulin tyrosine ligase-like 5 (TTLL5) whose mutation is also linked to severe forms of retinal degeneration.
