BACKGROUND: The incidence and prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been increasing worldwide recently. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major ocular complication of diabetes mellitus, and it is the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment.
