Oxidative damage to erythroid cells plays a key role in the pathogenesis of thalassemia. The oxidative stress in thalassemia is potentiated by heme, nonheme iron, and free iron produced by the Fenton reaction, due to degradation of the unstable hemoglobin and iron overload.
