Scrub typhus is a potentially severe rickettsiosis, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi in the Asia-Pacific region. Recently, however, two distinct pathogens, “Candidatus Orientia chuto” and “Candidatus Orientia chiloensis”, have been discovered in the Middle East and South America, respectively.
