Abstract excerpt
Abundant long-lived liver-resident macrophages, termed Kupffer cells, are activated during chronic liver injury. They secrete both pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic cytokines, which act on hepatic stellate cells causing their transdifferentiation into myofibroblasts that deposit collagen.
