PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hemolytic anemia caused by a point mutation in the β globin gene leading to the expression of an abnormal hemoglobin (HbS) that polymerizes under hypoxic conditions driving red cell sickling.
