BACKGROUND: Many studies support the hypothesis that brain glucose dysregulation contributes to neurodegeneration and disease progression. The SLC2A3 gene encodes the Neuronal Glucose Transporter 3 (GLUT3), a critical molecule for glucose transport into the neuron.
