BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is strongly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Plasma EBV DNA is a validated screening tool for NPC. In screening, there are some individuals who do not have NPC but carry EBV DNA in plasma.
