In immunocompromised patients, reactivation of latent BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) can cause disease with lytic infections of the kidneys and the lower urinary tract. Emerging evidence also links BKPyV to oncogenesis and high-grade intrarenal and transitional cell carcinomas.
