Chronic exposure to diesel engine exhausts is associated with an increased risk of pulmonary diseases including lung cancer. Diesel engine exhausts contain large amounts of diesel exhaust particles (DEP) on which are adsorbed several carcinogenic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
