Patients with hyperunstable α chain variants usually present with a thalassemic, rather than hemolytic, phenotype. Electrophoretic, ion exchange and reverse phase separations usually fail to detect the variant and when DNA sequencing identifies a 'silent' substitution it is usually presumed to be hyperunstable.
