ABSTRACT Apicomplexan parasites cause a variety of important infectious diseases, including malaria, toxoplasma encephalitis, and severe diarrhea due to Cryptosporidium . Most apicomplexans depend on an organelle called the apicoplast which is derived from a red algal endosymbiont.
