The deeply red-colored natural compound prodigiosin is a representative of the prodiginine alkaloid family, which possesses bioactivities as antimicrobial, antitumor, and antimalarial agents. Various bacteria including the opportunistic human pathogen Serratia marcescens and different members of the Streptomycetaceae and Pseudoalteromonadaceae produce prodiginines.
