The exopolyphosphatase of Escherichia coli processively and completely hydrolyses long polyphosphate chains to ortho-phosphate. Genetic surveys, based on the analysis of single ppx(-) or ppk(-) mutants and on the double mutant, demonstrate a relationship between these genes and the survival capacity.
