Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved lysosomal degradation pathway that removes damaged organelles and protein aggregates from the cytoplasm. Being post-mitotic, neurons are particularly vulnerable to the accumulation of proteotoxins and are thus heavily dependent on autophagy to maintain homeostasis.
