Hyphae of ascomycetes are compartmentalized by septa. The central pore in these septa allows for cytoplasmic streaming. However, many of these pores are closed by Woronin bodies in Aspergillus, which prevents cytoplasmic mixing and thus maintains hyphal heterogeneity.
