BACKGROUND: Atazanavir without ritonavir, despite efficacy and tolerability, shows low plasma concentrations that warrant optimization. METHODS: In a randomized, controlled, pilot trial, stable HIV-positive patients on atazanavir/ritonavir (with tenofovir/emtricitabine) were switched to atazanavir.
