INTRODUCTION: Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway deregulation (that is PIK3CA mutations and/or phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) loss) has been shown to enhance breast cancer cell survival and confer resistance to chemotherapeutic agents.
