Leptolyngbya boryana (Plectonema boryanum) is a diazotrophic cyanobacterium lacking heterocysts. How nitrogen fixation is regulated in filamentous nonheterocystous cyanobacteria remains unclear. Here we describe a large 50-kb nitrogen fixation (nif) gene cluster in L. boryana containing 50 genes.
