Nitrogenase is an oxygen-vulnerable metalloenzyme that catalyzes nitrogen fixation. It largely remains unknown how nitrogenase coexists with oxygenic photosynthesis in nonheterocystous cyanobacteria, since there have been no appropriate model cyanobacteria so far.
