The retinylidene chromophore mutant (Y185F) of bacteriorhodopsin, in which Tyr-185 is substituted by phenylalanine, is examined and compared with wild-type bacteriorhodopsin expressed in Escherichia coli; both were reinstituted similarly in vesicles.
