BACKGROUND & AIMS: The Z variant (Glu342Lys) of α(1)-antitrypsin (AT) polymerizes and accumulates in the hepatocyte endoplasmic reticulum (ER) predisposing to neonatal hepatitis and liver cirrhosis.
