Skeletal muscle atrophy results in loss of strength and an increased risk of mortality. We found that lysophosphatidic acid, which activates a G protein (heterotrimeric guanine nucleotide-binding protein)-coupled receptor, stimulated skeletal muscle hypertrophy through activation of Gα(i2).
