Cerebral small vessel disease is difficult to directly visualize in vivo. Therefore, we rely on radiological phenotypes as surrogate markers of disease. The principal phenotypes of clinical interest are small, deep brain infarcts, cerebral white matter lesions, deep brain haemorrhages, and cerebral microbleeds.
