In humans, heme iron is the most abundant iron source, and bacterial pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus acquire it for growth. IsdB of S. aureus acquires Fe(III)-protoporphyrin IX (heme) from hemoglobin for transfer to IsdC via IsdA.
