NhaA, a Na(+)/H(+) antiporter critical for pH and Na(+) homeostasis in Escherichia coli, as well as other enterobacteria and possibly Homo sapiens, was modified for fluorescence spectroscopy by constructing a functional Trp-less NhaA mutant.
