A spontaneous mutant of Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus resistant to the Na(+)/H(+) antiporter inhibitor harmaline was isolated. The Na(+)/H(+) exchange activity in the mutant cells was remarkably decreased in comparison with wild-type cells.
