The ability of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) to form attaching and effacing intestinal lesions is a major characteristic of EPEC pathogenesis. Using TnphoA mutagenesis we have identified a chromosomal gene (eae, for E. coli attaching and effacing) that is necessary for this activity.
